The Manifesto
of Non-Hostile Communication

What’s the Manifesto

The Manifesto of Non-Hostile Communication is a commitment to shared responsibility.
It aims to promote respectful and civilized online behaviour.
It aims to ensure that the Internet is a welcoming and safe space for everyone.

10 style principles.
A serious commitment.

From the Internet, for the Internet.

  1. Virtual is real

On the Internet, I only write or say what I would dare to say in person.

  2. You are what you communicate

The words I choose define who I am. They represent me.

  3. Words shape the way you think

I take all the time I need to express my views in the best possible way.

  4. Listen before you speak

No one can always be right, and nor am I. I listen, with an honest and open-minded attitude.

  5. Words are bridges

I choose words to understand, make myself understood and get close to others.

  1. Words have consequences

I am aware that what I say or write can have consequences, small or serious.

  2. Share with care

I share texts and images only after I have read, assessed and understood them.

  3. Ideas can be discussed.
    People must be respected

Those whose views and opinions differ from mine are not enemies to be destroyed.

  4. An insult is not an argument

I accept no offensive and aggressive words, even if they support my point of view.

  5. Silence says something too

When it’s better to keep quiet… I do.

The books

There are four editorial projects inspired by the Manifesto:“Parole Ostili- 10 racconti” (Hostile Words – 10 stories), 10 short stories written by 10 prestigious Italian authors, “Parole appuntite, parole piumate” a booklet of nursery rhymes for children written by Anna Sarfatti and illustrated by Nicoletta Costa, “Penso, Parlo, Posto” (To post or not to post?) designed for children between 11 and 16 years old,“Il mio primo telefono” (My first mobile phone) designed for children and parents who want to experience the Net informed and risk-free. (Currently only available in Italian)

Television projects

The Manifesto landed on TV in two special occasions: on the children’s TV channel Super!, thanks to Rocco Hunt, an Italian rapper well known among kids and on Discovery Italia’s TV channels K2 and Frisbee – thanks to the project “Oggy prende la parola” (“Oggy starts to speak”) for the cartoon Oggy and the Cockroaches.

In all Italian schools

In spring 2017, the Manifesto was sent to all Italian school thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education and was introduced to teachers and students through initiatives such as teaching training courses and educational activities.
